Durga Puja 2007- October 12th, 13th & 14th at Maynard High School, MA

Trees adorning themselves in vibrant hues of red and gold and the slight nip in the autumn air make every Bengali nostalgic. It reminds us all of past times when we woke up to the voice of the late Birendra Krishna Bhadra reciting the 'Mahishasuramardini', gathered shiuli flowers in the pre-dawn darkness and watched as the pandals were constructed. Here, at Bangla-O-Biswa, we wish to bring alive those times when men in white dhotis and women in colorful saris milled in the pandals, the children ran around in new clothes, the smell of freshly cooked pulao mingled with the fragrance of dhoop and pujor gaan fused with the anjali mantra.

This year, let us recreate the puja of our childhood and let us take the time to appreciate our loved ones, enjoy our time with friends and make new ones. We hope that the Bangla-o-Biswa family will all come together on our 25th year  and celebrate this auspicious occasion. With you there, we will make new memories and hope that the next generation growing up in the US, will look back fondly on this puja as we look back.

Amit Kumar, a name that needs no introduction, comes from a family with a rich musical and acting background. His father, the legendary Kishore Kumar is one of the greats of Hindi cinema and his mother Ruma Guha Thakurata, is a top Bengali singer by her own rights. Born on 3 July 1952, Amit sang his first Hindi song in his father Kishore Kumar's "Door Ka Rahi" in 1971 and his first Bengali song in 1972. Over the years, he has gifted us with innumerable memorable songs and one of his earlier songs "Bade Acche Lagte Hai", from the movie "Balika Badhu (1973), is an all-time classic. Amit also went on to win the Filmfare award for Best Male Singer in 1981 for "Yaad Aa Rahi Hai" from "Love Story" with music by R.D. Burman. His distinct singing style has made Bengali albums like "Kolkatar Gaan", "Sagarika", "Mayabini" instant hits. He also had a stint as a child star in "Door Gagan Ki Chaon Mein" (1964) as a mute boy acting along side dad Kishore Kumar.
